How the date calculator works

The first calculator counts the days between two dates. By default it counts the nights between them, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. Tick the box to count the end date too, which is useful when you want to include both the first and the last day, for example the length of a trip or a rental period.

It also shows the same gap as weeks, as years, months and days, and as the number of weekdays from Monday to Friday. Public holidays are not removed, because they differ by state and by year.

The second calculator adds or subtracts days, weeks, months or years from a date and tells you the day of the week. When you add months and the target month is shorter, the result lands on the last day of that month. For example, one month after 31 January is 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year. Leap years are handled automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the days between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later one. For example, 1 January to 31 January is 30 days. Choose both dates above and the calculator does it for you, including leap years.

Does the result include the end date?

Not by default. The result is the number of days from the start to the end. Tick the inclusive box if you also want to count the end date, which adds one day.

How are weekdays counted?

Only Monday to Friday are counted. Saturdays and Sundays are left out. Public holidays are not removed because they change by state and by year, so subtract them yourself if they apply.

What happens when I add one month to 31 January?

The calculator moves to the last day of the shorter month, so you get 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year.

Does it work for dates in the past and the future?

Yes. You can choose any date from the year 1900 to 2200, and the start date can be before or after the end date.
