1. Price after discount
2. Find the discount percentage
How discounts are calculated
To find the price after a discount, multiply the original price by (1 - discount%). A 30% discount on RM200 gives RM200 x 0.70 = RM140, so you save RM60.
Double discounts do not add up. A 30% discount followed by an extra 10% is not a 40% discount. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so RM200 becomes RM140 and then RM126. The total saving is 37%, not 40%. This calculator handles stacked discounts for you, which is useful for sales that offer "extra 10% off" at checkout or with a voucher.
If tax applies to the item, it is normally added after the discount. Enter the tax percentage if you want to see the final amount you pay. Whether tax applies, and at what rate, depends on the item, so check the receipt or ask the seller.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.80. For example, 20% off RM150 is RM150 x 0.80 = RM120. You save RM30.
Is 30% plus 10% the same as 40% off?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price. 30% then 10% equals a 37% total discount. Use the extra discount box above to see the exact figure.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Discount % = (original price - sale price) / original price x 100. Use the second calculator on this page.
Is the tax added before or after the discount?
In most cases, the discount is applied first and tax is calculated on the reduced price. Your receipt will show the exact order used by the seller.
Can I use this to check a sale price is real?
Yes. Enter the original and sale price and the calculator shows the real discount percentage. Also check that the original price was a genuine price recently.
