How a Malaysian car loan is calculated
Most car loans in Malaysia are hire purchase loans that use a flat rate. The interest is worked out on the original loan amount for the whole tenure, and it does not shrink as you pay the balance down. The formula is simple: total interest equals loan amount x flat rate x number of years. Add that to the loan amount and divide by the number of months to get your monthly instalment.
Because the interest is not reduced as you repay, the effective interest rate is almost double the flat rate. That is why a 3% flat rate is closer to 5.5% to 6% per year in real terms. This calculator shows an approximate effective rate so you can compare a car loan fairly against other loans, which usually quote the effective rate.
The result is an estimate. Your bank may add stamp duty, processing fees and insurance, and these can change your total cost. Always read the offer letter carefully.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between flat rate and effective rate?
A flat rate charges interest on the full original loan for the whole tenure. An effective rate charges interest only on the remaining balance. Since you are paying down the loan every month, the effective rate for the same loan is much higher than the flat rate.
What is the maximum car loan tenure in Malaysia?
Many banks offer up to 9 years for new cars, but the limit depends on the bank, the car and your age. Shorter tenures mean higher instalments but less total interest.
How much down payment do I need for a car?
Banks commonly finance up to 90% of the price for many cars, so 10% is a common down payment. A larger down payment lowers the loan amount and your total interest.
Can I pay off my car loan early?
Yes, but a flat-rate loan normally uses a settlement formula such as the Rule of 78, so you may not save as much interest as you expect. Ask your bank for a settlement figure and check for early settlement fees.
Does this include insurance and road tax?
No. This calculator only covers the loan instalment. Insurance, road tax, registration and other fees are additional costs.
